50 Cent was born in South Jamaica, Queens, New York City. He grew up without his father and was raised by his mother until she was murdered. He was 12 years old at the time of her death and moved in to his grandparents’ house with his eight aunts and uncles. At the same age, he began dealing narcotics and in the tenth grade was caught with firearms and drug money by the metal detectors at Andrew Jackson High School. After his arrest, he admitted openly that he sold drugs to his grandmother.
He left street life behind him and began pursuing a rap career. It was a difficult starting over, but perseverance would eventually pay off. His career sidelined on May 24, 2000 when a gunman alleged to be Darryl “Hommo” Baum outside his grandmother’s former home attached him. Nine rounds were fired and the volley took its toll: Nine gunshots wounds in the hand, arm, hip, both legs, chest and left cheek. 50 Cent spent thirteen days in hospital recovering, was using a walker for the first six weeks outside of hospital, and fully recovered five months later adopting a workout routine to help him attain his current muscular physique.
After the release of his first album entitled, “Guess Who’s Back?” in 200, 50 Cent was discovered by Eminem and signed to Interscope Records. Together with Dr. Dre, they produces 50 Cent’s first commercial success in February 2003 entitled, “Get Rich or Die Tryin’.” Allmusic described the album as “the most hyped debut album by a rap artist in about a decade”, and Rolling Stone noted the album for its “dark synth grooves, buzzy keyboards and a persistently funky bounce.” It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold 872,000 copies in the first four days and the lead single, “In da Clun” broke a billboard record as the most listened to song in radio history within a week. 50 Cent became one of the world highest selling rappers, almost overnight.
Interscope granted 50 Cent his own label, G-Unit Records in 2003 and he signed Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, and Young Buck as the established members of G-Unit. The Game signed under a joint venture with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment. In March 2005, Jackson's second commercial album, The Massacre, sold 1.14 million copies in the first four days and peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 for six weeks, becoming the first solo artist o have three singles dominate the Billboard top five in a week with "Candy Shop", "Disco Inferno", and "How We Do".
In a recent interview with British entertainment website ContactMusic, 50 Cent announced that he was working on a (primarily) eurodance album entitled “Black Magic,” inspired by European nightclubs. However, he later confirmed that Black Magic was shelved for new material that did not fit the original album concept. He also confirmed that he was working on his fifth studio album, formerly known as “The Return of the Heartless Monster,” renamed “Black Magic restored.”
50 Cent has also an interest in an acting career, appearing in the semi-autobiographical film Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005), the Iraq War film Home of the Brave (2006), and Righteous Kill (2008).
He was ranked as the sixth best artist of the 2000-2009 decade by Billboard Magazine as well as the fourth top male and third top rap artist. Billboard also ranked him the six best and most successful Hot 100 Artist and number one rap artist of the 2000-2009 decade. 50 Cent continues to work on his fifth studio album. “Black Magic” with its release expected in late 2011.
