In New Hampshire, Steve Tyler created a band called “The Strangeurs” in 1964, which evolved in to “Chain Reaction.” While this was on going, Perry and Hamilton moved to Boston, Massachusetts in September after forming the “Jam band” and were later joined by Joey Kramer. Coincidentally in 1970, Chain Reaction and Jam Band performed at the same gig, and in October the two bands joined forces leading to many stoned-out afternoons, the bands were joined by Rhythm guitarist Ray Tabano and Aerosmith was born.
Nipmuc Regional High School in Mendon, Massachusetts was Aerosmith’s first gig in 1970. Then in 1971, Brad Whitford replaced Tabano, and the next year, the band had a management deal with David Krebs and Steve Leber, who invited President Clive Davis of Columbia Records to see the band at Max’s Kansas City. Bootleg was released with the stand-alone single Chip Away the Stone. By this time, front man/lead singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry were known as the “Toxic Twins” for the near legendary drug use and abuse on and off the stage.
Joe Perry left Aerosmith in the middle of the 1979’s “Night in the Ruts” recording. He then created the Joe Perry Project and was replaced by Richard Supa, and then with Jimmy Crespo. Aerosmith supported the album by touring, and it eventually went Platinum.
