American singer-songwriter, Anastacia (born Anastacia Lyn Newkirk on September 17, 1968 in Chicago Illinois) is world-renowned for the power of her soul voice and her small stature (5”3), leading to the nickname “The Little Lady with The Big Voice. She has enjoyed success great success in Europe, Asia, South Africa and South America but strangely, not been as successful in America. Her debut album entitled “Not That Kind,” was released in 2000 and achieved multi-platinum sales in Australia, New Zealand and much of Europe. She received critical acclaim from Elton John and Michael Jackson. She was the fourth biggest European Single and biggest Australian single of 2000 and accorded the “Best-selling International Artist” award in 2000. Her follow up albums, “Freak of Nature” in 2001 and the self titled “Anastacia” in 2004 continued her multi-platinum success across Europe, making her one of the fastest and biggest selling artists of the new millennium.

Anastacia’s late father Robert Newkirk (of German descent) was a club-singer and her mother Diane Hurley (of Irish descent) was a Broadway actress. After her father left, the family moved to New York City when she was a teenager, where she enrolled at the Professional Children's School in Manhattan. She developed an interest in dance despite a diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease when she was thirteen and rose to prominence on BET’s Comic View when she sang Oleta Adams’ “Get here” in 1992. She appeared regularly on Club MTV and in videos for the hip-hop group Salt-n-Pepa. In March 1999, she attracted the attention of record labels, specifically Daylight Records after making the finals of the MTV talent show The Cut.

Anastacia’s 2000 debut album “Not That Kind” reached the top ten in eight countries across Europe and Asia, went triple platinum in Australian and the debut’s single “I’m outta love was a chart topper in Australia and New Zealand, number 2 in France, number 11 in the UK and a Top 10 hit in Italy. The second single, “Not That Kind,” reach number 11 in the UK and was a Top 10 hit in Italy and entered the Top 20 in France and Switzerland. "Cowboys & Kisses" was released as the third single and charted in the Top 40 of some European countries. The final single "Made for Lovin' You" charted in the UK at number twenty-seven and in France at number seventy-two.

Her second album, Freak of Nature achieved respectable sales. The first single released was "Paid My Dues".The song was a hit, peaking in Denmark, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland, and reaching the top ten in several other mainland European countries. The second single, "One Day in Your Life", reached number eleven in the UK and the top ten in many European countries. The next single "Why'd You Lie to Me" reached the top thirty in the UK. "You'll Never Be Alone" was the fourth single, reached number twenty-eight on the Adult Contemporary chart in the U.S.

Anastacia joined Celine Dion, Shakira, Cher, Dixie Chicks, and Stevie Nicks for VH1's Divas Live in 2002 and she also contributed the song "Love Is a Crime" to the Chicago soundtrack. The song peaked at number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart and enjoyed moderate airplay on Rhythmic/Dance format.

Having enjoyed significant success, Anastacia set about making a change to her music and the way it sounded, bringing in many rock instruments to give a new atmosphere while maintaining the funkiness and the pop to create a new sound “Sprock.” A combination of soul, pop and rock, it dominated her third, self-titled album, working alongside Glen Ballard, Dallas Austin and David A. Stewart for Release in 2004. The album’s first single, “Left Outside alone” was a change in direction and would become one of the biggest songs of Europe in 2004, and become one of her greatest hits.

The album itself went on to be hit, topping national charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Australia, Greece, Germany and many other countries. Unlike her first two albums, Anastacia was not released in the USA as the single “Left Outside Alone” was released twice but failed to pick up heavy airplay, gaining sporadic Adult Contemporary and Hot AC format airplay. Again, it sparked Rhythmic/Dance format airplay and the dance mix of "Left Outside Alone" peaked at number five on the Hot Dance Club Play.

Anastacia released three further internationally successful singles: “Sick and Tired,” which became yet another number one in Spain and another UK Top 5. Single.“Welcome to My Truth” was her best selling hit in Spain and the ballad “Heavy on My Heart,” the proceeds of which went towards the Anastacia Fund (a charitable organization providing research funding for breast cancer).

From September 2004 to August 2005, Anastacia went on the Live at Last Tour. By 2005 the tour was renamed to the Encore Tour. In late 2005, she released her first greatest hits collection, called Pieces of a Dream, named after a track of the same name. The album spawned the hit singles "Pieces of a Dream" and "I Belong to You (Il Ritmo Della Passione)", a duet with Eros Ramazzotti, which was a huge hit in Europe, charting and peaking in the top ten in almost all the European countries.

Her fourth album, entitled “Heavy Rotation” was released on October 27, 2008 in Europe and Asia, and everywhere else in 2009. Featuring collaborations with producers Ne-Yo, The Heavyweights, Lester Mendez, J. R. Rotem, and Rodney Jerkins, the album's first single, "I Can Feel You", began playing in some radio markets on August 25, 2008. The second single "Absolutely Positively", later served as a promotional single only. The third official single, "Defeated" was released as a promotional single only in Europe without a music video. Her fourth studio album proved to be less successful than her previous ones; her singles did not reach top 40 in her most popular country (UK). Despite its lukewarm reception, in June 2009, Anastacia started her second tour throughout Europe to promote the album and well received by critics and fans alike.

Most recently, Anastacia confirmed that she would be releasing a number of singles in 2011 and her fifth album in 2012.
