Christina Aguilera, “the little girl with the big voice” as she was known growing up, was born on Staten Island in 1980. Her parents Frausto Wagner Xavier Aguilera and Shelly Lorain divorced in 1987 when she moved to her grandmother’s house in Rochester, Pennsylvania with her mother and sister Rachel. Aguilera believes she was passionately driven to music by her childhood in which domestic violence was a regular occurrence.
Aguilera began chasing her dream of becoming a singer at a young age, taking part in local talent shows and competitions such as Star Search where she came second on March 15, 1990 singing “ A Sunday Kind of Love” which she also sang on a local T.V. show. She also performed “The Star Spangled Banner” before local hockey, football and baseball matches. Following her dreams led her to Disney where she auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club to play alongside other teen stars but had to wait for another two years as she was too young to join the cast. In 1993, joined the Club and performed musical numbers and comical sketches until the show ended in 1994.Her dreams started to come true in 1994 when she recorded her first song “All I Wanna Do” a duet with Keizo Nakanishi, A Japanese singer. In 1998 Aguilera earned her first contract with RCA Records and the song “Reflection” for Disney’s feature film Mulan.
On August 24, 1999, Christina Aguilera’s self titled debut album was released selling 17 million copies worldwide. Three of the album’s singles “Genie in a bottle”, “What a girl wants” and “Come on Over Baby” reached the top of the charts while “I turn to you” peaked at number three. Aguilera is one of the few artists to have more than one chart topping single in a debut album and earned her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The year 2000 was also a busy year for Aguilera during which she recorded her first Spanish language album “Mi Reflejo” on September 12, which reached number 27 on the Billboard 200 and again earned her a Latin Grammy for “Best Female Pop Vocal Album”. The album went gold in the US and it won a World Music Award and a Billboard Award. The same year Aguilera released a Christmas Album, “My Kind of Christmas” and sang “The Christmas Song “at the White House. This year also saw her set off on her first concert tour: “Sears & Levis US tour or Christina Aguilera: In Concert.” The next year Aguilera worked with other well known artists including Ricky Martin, Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink. This year will also mean the end of her collaboration with Kurtz after a series of legal problems and Irving Azoff replaced him.
The year 2002 brought about an image change in the performer with the release of her album “Stripped” which showed a raunchier side of her .The album sold more than 330,000 copies and reached number 2 on the Billboard 200.The album included other music types such as contemporary R&B, gospel, soul and more. “Xtina,” as she called herself, also posed for photo shoots showing her sexy side. This image was supported in her music video “Dirrty”. She supported this new image by saying it was a better portrayal of her true self. Her second single from this album “Beautiful” had more of a ballad quality, which earned her a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Pop Performance. The singles “Fighter”, “Can’t Hold us Down” and “The Voice” kept the Album in the Charts for two years. Aguilera was named top female artist in 2003, the year of her Stripped tour. In 2005, Aguilera married Jordan Bratman.
Aguilera’s fifth album “Back to the Basics” released in 2006 was a huge success. Back to the Basics sold 4, 5 million copies and launched the “Back to the Basics Tour” which grossed approximately $90 million ($50 million in North America) making it the most successful US tour by a female in 2007.Successes kept coming her way with another Grammy from the 49th ceremony. She was also awarded an Emmy with Tony Bennett for their duet “Steppin’ Out” .With appearances in Martin Scorsese’ documentary Shine a Light and the film Get to the Greek and the album Keep Gettin’ Better: A Decade of Hits released by RCA Records Aguilera exited the decade as one of Billboard’s Top 20 Artists of the Decade.
“Bionic,” Aguilera’s sixth album released in 2010 was not as much as a commercial success and its promotion was short lived. The year also saw the end of her marriage to Bratman. However, not all was bad in 2010 as besides starring in the seventh season finale of Entourage she also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This year she also starred in the musical film Burlesque during which she met and started dating musician and production assistant, Matt Rutler. The film was a success and earned her a nomination for best Original song for the track “Bound to You” with co-writer Sia Furler and writer/producer Samuel Dixon. Since then Aguilera has collaborated with rapper T.I on the track, “Castle Walls” from his album “No Mercy.” Aguilera has to become a coach and judge on the John de Mol created singing competition “The Voice” alongside Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green as judges and coaches; as well as host Carson Daly. The show will start on NBC in late April 2011.
With her long career, Christina Aguilera has proved that with her extraordinary talent and unstoppable drive. We will be seeing more of her and the different sides of her personality for years to come.
