On January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, a child destined to be a king in the music industry was born 35 minutes after a stillborn twin from a 22-year old Gladys Love Presley and 18-year old Vernon Elvis in a shotgun house. The only child formed a tight bond with his parents and the whole family attended an Assembly of God church where he first developed an interest in music. The child was Elvis Presley. Presley is of Western European mix, with a father having no ambition for the family and content receiving handouts from friends, neighbors and the government. He was jailed for eight months for check fraud, and Presley’s mother took him to live with relatives. He then entered first grade at East Tupelo Consolidated in September 1941. His teachers encouraged him to join a contest at Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show on October 3, 1945 where he placed fifth. On his tenth birthday he received a guitar and started learning from two uncles and the church pastor. In September 1946, Presley entered a new school Milam and was a loner, teased as a trashy kid. But Slim, from Misisippi Slim’s show on WELO saw the potential and supplemented Presley’s chord techniques. At 12, Presley was scheduled for two on-air performances. Stage fright stopped him the first time but he succeeded on the second performance.

In November 1948, Presley’s family moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he enrolled at Humes High School. He was branded as a mama’s boy, and in 1950 practiced guitar regularly with Jesse Lee Denson and brothers Dorsey and Johnny Burnette. In September, he started working various jobs. Then on his junior year, he stood out due to his change in appearance, and by senior year, he started wearing flashy clothes from Lansky Brothers. Overcoming his shyness, Presley competed in Humes Annual “Minstrel” show in April of 1953. In August 1953 and January 1954, Presley recoreded acetate disc demos at Sun Records in the hope of being discovered but Sam Phillips, boss of Sun Records gave him a chance claiming that, he could make a “billion dollars” if he could find a white man who had the Negro sound and feel. The trio found the sound of July 5, 1954 in the middle of the night and the cover of Arthur Crudup’s “That’s All Right,” that generated a great deal of interest in his music. On July 17, the trio Presley, Moore and Black performed at the Bon Air club. Due to nerves, Presley’s legs shook so bad, but then utilize it and started shaking legs, which made the crowd go wild. DJ and Promoter Bob Neal became their manager. By early 1955, Presley’s Hayride appearances made him a star from Tennessee to West Texas. Neal introduced Presley to Colonel Tom Parker, the promoter of the age and Presley made his television debut on March 3 on the KSLA-TV. However, Presley’s music was a blend of styles, known as “rockabilly” making it difficult to play on radio.

Neal’s management contract was renewed on August 1955, with Parker as special adviser. The trio became quartet with drummer Fontana, and at the Country Disc Jockey Convention in November, Presley was voted the year’s most promising male artist and became RCA Victor’s heavily promoted new singer. Presley made his first recording for RCA on January 10, 1956 and it was released on January 27. Pianist Floyd Cramer, guitarist Chet Atkins, and three background singers, including Gordon Stoker, joined them. Then on March 2, Neal’s contract was terminated, leaving Parker as Presley’s manager. On March 23, RCA Victor released Presley’s self-titled debut album. Presley made two appearances on NBC’s Milton Berle Show on April 3, and signed a seven-year contract with Paramount Pictures. By this time, Presley was branded by the FBI as a danger to teenaged youth for rousing sexual passion.

After the Berle show, on July 1, Presley appeared on NBC’s Steve Allen Show and received criticism as talentless, absurd, and labeled him as comedy act. Allen’s show bested CBS’s Ed Sullivan Show for the first time but despite that, Sullivan booked Presley for an unprecedented $50,000 on a show that made Presley a national celebrity. His rock in roll music always created a riot and produce screams from millions of fans. His second album called “Elvis” was released on October. On November 21, Presley’s first motion picture “Love Me Tender” was released. The year 1956 ended with Presley’s story on the front page of Wall Street Journal. On January 6, 1957, Presley made his final appearance on “Ed Sullivan Show.” He then made tours, and many condemned Presley’s music, including Frank Sinatra. However, Presley just answered by saying he admired Sinatra and he should not have said those thing about Presley. During the holiday release of Elvis’ Christmas Album, Moore and Black resigned, who were obviously receiving only a modest weekly salary. On March 24, 1958, Presley joined the U.S. Army as a private at Fort Chaffee. In August, his mother was diagnosed with hepatitis with a worsened condition. He arrived on emergency leave on August 12, and to Presley’s devastation, she died two days later from heart failure.

On October 1, Presley joined the 3rd Armored Division in Friedberg, Germany. Here he met 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu. During his absence from music while serving in the war, Presley was never forgotten due to the carefully prepared plan by RCA that continued to released previously recorded material, earning ten Top 40 hits. On March 2, 1960, Presley returned to the U.S. with scheduled stops to please fans. On May 12, he returned to television on The Frank Sinatra Timex Special. The following year Presley performed two shows for charity. On March 25, he performed a benefit concert for the Pearl Harbor Memorial. During the 1960’s, Presley had made 27 movies that were all profitable. Before Christmas of 1966, Presley proposed to Priscilla and were married on May 1, 1967. However, that move had lead to a decline in sales and he had lost the majority of his fans. On February 1, 1968, Lisa Marie was born in a time when Presley was unhappy with his music career. Moreover, on December 3, 1968, Presley appeared on the special show “Elvis”, which was known as the “’68 Comeback Special.”

After the comeback, Presley recorded sessions at American Sound Studio and released “From Elvis to Memphis” in June 1969. Beginning July 31, Presley started live performing where London Palladium for International Hotel booked him. The success of the performances led to a five-year contract with hotel, with an annual salary of $1 million. Soon after, the album “That’s The Way It Is” was released. On December 21, 1970, Presley met President Richard Nixon, adamantly stating his contempt for drugs, and asked for a Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs badge. Then on January 16, 1971, Presley was named one of the annual Ten Most outstanding Young Men of The Nation by U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce. Before long, Highway 51 South was named Elvis Presley Boulevard. Following that, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. In April 1972, MGM filmed Elvis on Tour and he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Documentary Film. The gospel album “He Touched Me” earned his second Grammy award for Best Inspirational Performance, and “Elvis: As Recorded at Madison Square Garden” was Presley’s best-selling album. In 1971, Presley’s affair with Joyce Bova resulted in pregnancy and abortion. Elvis and Priscilla separated on February 23, 1972 after Priscilla’s disclosure of relationship with karate instructor Mike Stone. Then Linda Thompson, Presley’s new girlfriend moved in with him five months after the breakup. Elvis and Priscilla filed for divorce on August 18.

Presley performed two benefit concerts for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund in January 1973. Then on a midnight show, he was apparently attacked by four men that he saw off with Karate learned during his time in the military. October 9, 1973, his divorce was finalized as rprolonged drug use took its toll on his body. Presley’s physician Dr. George C. Nichopoulos said that Presley thought he was unlike other street junkies for he gets his drugs from doctors. On July 13, 176, Presley’s father fired Memphis Mafia’s bodyguards. In November, Presley and Linda broke up and Ginger Alden became the new girlfriend to whom Presley had given an engagement ring by which close friends said he did not intend to marry her. RCA was struggling to record with Presley, going as far as to attempt to record in Presley’s home. He became so hard to understand, overweight and totally consumed with drugs. On the evening of August 16, 1977, he was supposed to fly to Memphis for another tour, but on the afternoon, Alden discovered Presley on his bathroom door unresponsive. Elvis Presley was pronounced dead at 3:30pm at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Thousands of people formed outside Graceland to view the open casket of the star who was buried next to his beloved mother before both was reburied Graceland’s Meditation Garden on October 2 1977.
