Marco Antonio Muñiz was born on September 16, 1969. The American musician, singer-songwriter, actor and producer is better known as Marc Anthony and the two-time Grammy and three-time Latin Grammy award winner is a top selling tropical salsa artist with more than 30 million albums sold worldwide. Since 2009, he has tied with Victor Manuelle on the Billboard Tropical Songs Chart for having the most number-one singles.

Born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents, Anthony began his career as a session vocalist for Freestyle music and Underground House music as well as a songwriter and backing vocalist for pop acts such as Menudo and Latin Rascals. His first album “Rebel,” was a freestyle music record released in 1988 with Bluedog Records, followed by “Boy I’ve been Told” for fellow freestyle artist Sa-Fire later that year. In 1989 he sang the backup vocals for fellow freestyle artist Ann-Marie on the genre club hit, “With or Without You.” In 1990, he wrote and whispered a duet with Freestyle artist Chrissy I-eece entitled “You Should Know By Now.”

He continued singing backing vocals and song writing on numerous freestyle tracks throughout the early 1990s including Edmond’s “Come Back To Me,” and 1992’s “Love Change,” Little Louie Vega’s “Ride On The Rhythm,” and his “When The Night Is Over” album. It was only at the end of 1992, after opening for Tito Puente at New York’s Madison Square Garden did he change from Freestyle to salsa and other forms of Spanish Music.

Initially hesitant about becoming a salsa musician, listening to Juan Gabriel’s hit “HAsta Que te Conoci,” changed his mind. Drawing inspiration from the music of Ruben Blades, Juan Gabriel and Tito Puente, he released his Spanish debut “Otra Not” in 1993 with RMM Records. Subsequent and numerous tours throughout the Americas established Anthony as one of the emerging new stars of Sals

He followed up in 1995 with “Todo A Su Tiempo” which won Billboard’s Hot Trpical Artist of the Year award and Grammy nominations for a number of songs including “Te Conozco Bien,” “Hasta Ayer,” “Nadie Como Ella,” “Se Me Sigue Olvidando,” “Te Amare,” and "Llegaste A Mi." The album that has sold over 800,000 copies and earned gold in the USA and Puerto Rico.

He followed up his successes with a more traditional sounding third album, “Contra la Corriente.” The promotional concert at Madison Square Garden sold out and won him the 1999 Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Performance. The album also spawned his first number one hit on the Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks Chart, “Y Hubo Alguien.” It was also the first ever hit by a salsa musician, and was the first salsa album in the hisotry to enter the Billboard 200.

After a drawn out battle with RMM, he left the label in 1999 and signed with Sony, recording a duet “No Me Ames,” with then friend Jennifer Lopez on her album “On the 6.” Later that year, Anthony followed in the footsteps of Enrique Iglesias, Selena and Ricky Martin by breaking in to the anglophone market, releasing an English-language Lation Pop self titled debut album. The lead single, “I Need to Know” and the Spanish Version “Dímelo.” The album spawned several other hits including “When I Dream at Night” and “My Baby You,” and overall was a mixed success because it alienated his traditional salsa fans.

In 2001, he released another salsa album, “Libre” and it went gold thanks to the songs “Celos,” “Este Loco Que Te Mira,” “Viviendo” and “Barco A La Deriva,” and would enjoy fourteen weeks at the number one sport on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums Chart. This was followed by the album “Mended” in 2002,” an English album that included the smash hit, “I’ve Got You” and “I Need You” (“Te Tengo Aqui” and “Me Haces Falta” in Spanish.”Like his original self titled English debut, it received mixed reviews and some view it as less of a success.

In 2004, he released the Latin Pop album “Amar Sin Mentiras” in June, and covered the songs for his salsa album “Valio la Pena” released in July. There were songs of note on both albums including “Ahora Quien,” and “Escapémonos” with Jennifer Lopez, “Valió La Pena,” “Se Esfuma Tu Amor,” and “Tu Amor Me Hace Bien.” At the Latin Grammy Awards in 2005, Amar Sin Mentiras was awarded best Latin Pop Album of the Year and he performed "Escapémonos" with Lopez at the 2005 Grammy Awards. This was followed by a Spanish greatest hits album in 2006 entitled “Sigo Siendo Yo.”

The artist has remained quiet and off the air since then, only releasing Iconos in 2010, which was covers of old Latin songs by other artists including Jose Luis Perales, Juan Gabriel and José José, leaving us wondering what comes next for Marc Anthony.
