“Moby” was born on September 11, 1965 as Richard Melville Hall in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, and raised in Darien, Connecticut. At nine he started playing music and played in a hardcore punk band “Vatican Commandos” from 1982 to 1985. The band released an EP titled “Hit Squad for God,” and he performed for the post-punk group “AWOL” which in 1983 released an eponymous album. And in 1988 Moby joined the “Ultra Vivid Scene” for a short time and he was in the video “Mercy Seat” on the UVS’ 1988 self-titled record.
In 1989, Moby signed with Instinct Records and made his first live solo performance witnessed by Eric Härle, his future manager. Moby’s first single was “Mobility,” and his second single was “Go,” which in October 1991 reached UK’s top ten, marking his first appearance on the Top of The Pops. Then in 1992 Moby toured with The Prodigy, Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva.
In 1993, Moby released an EP titled “Move” after signing with Mute Records and appeared again on Top of the Pops. He also went on a tour with Orbital and Aphex Twin in North America. Then in 1995, he released “Everything is Wrong,” his first album with a bonus Underwater CD. The album was named Album of the Year by Spin Magazine. He then headlined at Lollapalooza on the second stage and in 1996 released the double-album “Everything Is Wrong-Mixed and Remixed.”
Moby in 1996 released a punk rock album “Animal Rights” and toured Europe with Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Soundgarden. The single Come on Baby became his third’s Top of the Pops performance. Moby also contributed to the album “Offbeat: A Red Hot Soundtrip” with his song “Republican Party. “Then in 1997 he released “I Like to Score,” which was a compilation of arguably his best work for various movie soundtracks.
The album “Play” was his sixth and released in 1999 and reestablished Moby’s reputation and credibility, selling more than ten million records worldwide and put Moby at the Top of the Pops three times. In July 2001 Moby released “Moby: PlaytheDVD” which received a nomination for a 2002 Grammy Award. The album “18” was also released in 2002, which was certified Gold and Platinum in more than 30 countries, and sold over four million copies. Moby supported Play and 18 by touring throughout these years.
In 2001, Moby founded the Area: One Festival, a touring festival showcasing a myriad of music genres and set off on the “Area2” Tour in 2002. The following years would see Moby co-wrote with Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Britney Spears. He would also collaborate with Public Enemy on “Make Love, Fuck War,” and would headline the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Music Festival in 2003.
The album “Hotel,”was released in 2005 under the label Pacha and was certified Gold and Platinum in over twenty countries, with more than two million copies sold globally. The tracks “Lift Me Up,” and “Slipping Away” remains his largest European Hits. The next year, he was one of the casts in the movie “Pittsburgh,” and scored the soundtrack for the movie Southland Tales in 2007.
Moby produced and played on The Bongos’ remake of The Bulrushes in 2007, and appeared in the video. He then launched mobygratis.com, with revenue going to the Humane Society/HSUS. Also in 2007 the rock band The Little Death, NYC was started by Moby, and in 2008 he released the album Last Night.
Moby collaborated with The Sunday Times to release the album “A Night in NYC.” Then in June 2009 the album “Wait for Me” was released. Moby planned to tour for the new album and raised between $75000 and $100000 for victims of domestic violence. He also headlined the 2009 Falls Festival in Australia and other Sunset Sounds Festival.
Moby made an announcement on February 22, 2010 for a UGC competition with Genro.TV for a video clip by fans for his album “Wait for Me.” Out of the 500 entries, on April 19 Moby chose the video clip by Israeli Nimrod Shapira as the winning entry. On May 4, 2010, the single was released while the album itself was released the day before. Then on May 16, 2011 the album, “Destroyed” was released along with a photography book of the same title and with the EP “Be The One” containing three tracks for his most recent album.
Moby has released music with a variety of bands, crossing number genre and styles, ranging from Voodoo Child, Schaumgummi, and Vatican Commandos, to AWOL, Caeli Seoul and Gin Train. His skill is not in question, and neither is the talent, drive and passion he has for his music that touches the soul and warms the heart.
