The English folk rock band Mumford & sons is comprised of Marcus Mumford (vocals, guitar, drums, mandolin), Ben Lovett (vocals, keyboards, accordion, drums), Winston Marshall (vocals, banjo, dobro), and Ted Dwane (vocals, string bass, drums, guitar). The band came together in October of 2007 from the “West London folk music scene alongside other artists such as Laura Marling and Noah and the Whale. The band ‘s name is build around Marcus Mumford being the band’s most visible individual who organized the band and their performances.
Their first release was an EP “Love Your Ground” in 2008 with Chess Club Records and was supported by an extensive tour to expose audiences to their music and to build support for their debut album. The band played at a number of small and moderate venues across the UK and US, exposing audiences to material that would make it on to their debut album. When they finally signed with Island Records, their debut album “Sigh no more” was released in October 2009 and released in the USA in February of 2010 where it would peak on both the UK Album Chart and US Billboard 200 at number 2.
The album’s lead single, “Little Iron Man” was a track from their first EP and the only one to make the cut. The single became Dave Berry of XFM’s record of the week and then his favorite track of the year. The album also charted in Australia and New Zealand thanks to the album’s single that topped the Triple J Hottest 100 list for all of 2009. It was also this single that they performed on their first US network Television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman in February 2010 followed by a performance of “The Cave” on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson a week later.
The band’s popularity grew throughout the year and their first network television appearance was in the US in December 2010. Mumford and Sons has thus far earned two Grammy Award Nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rock Song. Although they did not win, their performance at the awards ceremony saw their sales rocket in both the UK and USA.They won the ARIA Music Award for “Most Popular International Artist in 2010 and the 2011 Brit award for “Best British Album.”
Since March 2011, “Sigh No More” has sold over one million copies in the UK and USA and while on tour in the early part of 2011, confirmed that they have begun working on the songs for their second album due in late 2011, well after their Second Stage appearance at the Glastonbury Festival.
