Portuguese-Canadian Nelly Furtado was born on December 2, 1978 in Victoria, British Columbia. Her parents are Maria Manuela and Antonio Jose Furtado, with siblings Michael Anthony and Lisa Anne. Furtado grew up as a Roman Catholic, started singing at four, and was writing songs at the age of twelve then played in a Portuguese marching band as a teenager.
Furtado met Tallis Newkirk from the Hip-Hop group “Plains of Fascination” and contributed vocals to their album “Join The Ranks” in 1996. After graduating from Mount Douglas Secondary School, Furtado moved to Toronto and in the next year created “Nelstar.” However, she eventually left the group and went back home.
In 1997, Furtado played in a talent show Honey Jam and attracted the attention of singer Gerald Eaton of The Philosopher Kings. Along with Brian West, they made a demo that landed Furtado a record deal with Dream Works Records in 1999. Then her first single “Party’s Just Begun (Again)” was released on the “Brokedown Palace: Music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.
Released in October 2000, “Whoa, Nelly!” was Furtado’s debut album. She headlined the “Burn in the Spotlight” Tour and was on Moby’s “Area:One” tour. In 2002, the album received four Grammy nominations, with the single winning the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Later in August 2006 “Whoa, Nelly!” managed to sell six million copies worldwide according to Maclean’s magazine.
In 2002 Furtado performed on the Thin Line song, provided vocals to Paul Oakenfold’s song, collaborated with Juanes, a Colombian artist, in the song Fotografia, and was featured in Breathe, from Monsters in the Closet by Swollen Members. The video won the 2003 Western Canadian Music Awards Outstanding Video and MuchVIBE’s Best Rap Video. In November 2003, Furtado released her second album “Folklore”, with a final track “Childhood Dreams” that became the anthem for the 2004 European Football Championship.
“Loose” her third album was released in June 2006 and reached number one in Canada and the U.S., and other countries worldwide. To support the album she opted for a “Get Loose Tour” on February 16, 2007 and made a homecoming to Victoria to perform at the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre. March 21, 2007 was declared as Nelly Furtado Day.
Furtado’s first live DVD/CD called “Loose the Concert” was released after the tour. Moreover, on April 1, 2007 she hosted the 2007 Juno Awards in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in where she won five awards. Then on July 1, 2007 Furtado performed at the “Concert for Diana” at Wembley Stadium in London.
Furtado and Justin Timberlake were featured on Timbaland’s “Give It To Me.” She then collaborated with James Morrison on “Broken Strings” which was released on December 8, 2008. Furtado also sang with Zero Assoluto in 2008.
On March 31, 2009, the album R.O.O.T.S. by Flo Rida was released with Furtado as guest performer on “Jump.” She also co-wrote and sang on the background of “Sunglasses” on Divine Brown’s Love Chronicles.
Via the Perez Hilton blog, Furtado announced the title of her Spanish album “Mi Plan,” with singles Manos Al Aire, Más, released on July 21, Mi Plan, released on August 11, 2009, and Bajo Otra Luz, released on September 1, 2009. Then on July 29, the video for “Manos al Aire” premiered on “It’s On,” with Alexa Chung. Moreover, in the Latin Grammy Awards on November 11, 2010 Furtado became the first Canadian to win a Latin Award.
Furtado was a guest in “Yes!” Canadian singer k-os’s new album, and had a collaboration with Saukrates for “I Wish I Knew,” Natalie Portman song which was released in July 2009. She also appeared on Tiësto’s Who Wants to be Alone for the Kaleidoscope album released on October 6, 2009. And for the new Sims 3 expansion, World Adventures, Furtado recorded the “Manos al Aire” in Simlish.
At the opening ceremony of the 2010, Vancouver Winter Olympic Games Furtado performed a duet with Bryan Adams on February 12, 2010. Two days later Furtado played at the Winter Olympic Victory Ceremony after the medal awards ceremony for athletes.
On March 24, 2010, Furtado did a VIP Pocket Show in the Big Brother Brasil 10 program to promote her tour in Brazil. Then on September 4, 2010, she made a participation in the recording of the DVD for the Brazilian singer Ivete Sanglo in Madison Square Garden.
In October 2010, Furtado was honored with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, and on October 26, 2010, the Mi Plan Remixes was released. Then on November 16, 2010, “The Best Of Nelly Furtado” was released, with a single Night Is Young premiered on October 3, 2010 on BBC Radio 1.
Nelly Furtado is a successful singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. She draws inspiration from her daughter Nevis, and has paid her dues in the music industry.
