Snoop Dogg mp3

The artist now known as Snoop Dogg was born in California in October 1971. Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr, was the middle of three sons born to sometime singer Vernall Varnado and Beverly Broadus (Snoop took the surname of his stepfather) and was nicknamed “Snoopy” by his parents for his hang-dog expression. His childhood started on the right vein with the Calvin singing in the local Baptist church choir and learning to the play the piano. His life took a wrong turn in his teens when he began to get into trouble, mainly for drug offences. He became associated with a gang in the Long Beach area and spent most of his later teenage years in and out of prison.

Music continued to be a part of this life and he started recording demo tapes along with his cousins and friends, under the name “213”, a reference to the Long Beach area postal code. One of the tapes made it’s way to Dr. Dre, who began working with the young rapper, firstly on tracks for his own debut solo album, “The Chronic” and then on Snoop’s first album, “Doggystyle” that was released in 1993. Several singles from the album made it onto the singles chart including “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?” and “Gin and Juice”, whilst the album remained on the Billboard for several months.

By now, he had adopted the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg, later shortened to Snoop Dogg and was very much part of the West Coast rap scene, although as music critics pointed out, Snoop’s vocals were much softer making him stand out from his rapper contemporaries. He couldn’t, however, distance himself from the violence and drugs that surrounded the rap scene and in 1993 was arrested again, this time in connection with the murder of his bodyguard, Philip Woldemariam. He was later cleared of charges surrounding the death putting out a short film and soundtrack about the experience, called “Murder Was The Case”.

In 1995, he formed his own record label. Doggy Style Records became a subsidiary of Death Row Records and the first artist to sign to the label was Charlie Wilson, formerly of The Gap Band. Wilson was to appear on the single “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head” which came from Snoop’s second album, “Tha Doggfather”. released in November 1996. The album was reasonable success but didn’t sell in volume, unlike its predecessor.

Snoop began to move away from his gangsta roots towards a gentler lyrical style. He even experimented in other musical genres, taking part in the alternative rock concert tour, “Lollapalooza” during 1997. The following year, he signed with No Limit Records, part of EMI Records and released three albums in quick succession: “Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told”, in 1998, followed by “No Limit Top Dogg” in 1999 and “Tha Last Meal” the following year. His fourth album for No Limit Records was “Paid tha Cost to Be da Bo$$” in 2002 which featured guest vocals by Pharrell.

He left No Limit Records the following year and signed with Geffen Records/Star Trak Entertainment releasing his seventh studio album, “R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta)” which contained the hit single “Drop It Like It Hot”, another collaboration with Pharrell that gave Snoop his first number one. He also achieved his highest entry in the UK singles chart with the record “Signs” which featured Justin Timberlake and Charlie Wilson.

Between “R&G and his next album, “The Blue Carpet Treatment” in 2006, Snoop made guest appearances on other artists singles including Ice Cube’s “Go to Church” and “Gangsta Walk” by Coolio. In 2007, he took the opportunity to work in a different musical and cultural area by singing a rap song for a Bollywood movie “Singh Is Kinng” . He also found time to release his ninth studio album, “Ego Trippin”. The album sold OK but not in the figures of his previous ventures, something that was repeated when his tenth album, “Malice n Wonderland” failed to make it into the top 20 Billboard album chart. Singles from the album such as “I Wanna Rock” and “Pronto” also failed to make an impression on the singles chart in the USA.

In between releasing his own albums (“Doggumentary” came out in March 2011), Snoop continues to collaborate with artists in different genres including appearing on Katy Perry’s smash hit single “California Gurls”, on the Gorillaz album “Plastic Beach” and “Get ‘em Girls” from Australian singer Jessica Mauboy.

He also continues to appear both on the big screen and the small screen. Over the years, Snoop has appeared in movies such as the Denzel Washington hit “Training Day”, the 2004 remake of “Starsky & Hutch” as well as small screen outings on shows such as “Entourage”, “King of the Hill” and “Las Vegas”. He has also written, produced and starred in his own TV series – “Doggy Fizzle Televizzle” in 2002 – and a reality TV show in 2007, called “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood”. But perhaps the one that Snoop holds most dear is his appearance in US soap opera “One Life to Live” which he watched as a boy back home in Long Beach and which remains his favourite TV show.

He has also turned his hand to directing and producing. In 2000 he directed an X-rated movie for Hustler, which was a huge success among its target market and followed this up two years later with another movie in a similar vein that again was successful. In 2005, he set up his own film production company called Snoopadelic Films. It’s first release was a small film called “Boss’n Up” which was inspired by Snoop’s album “R&G”.

Snoop Dogg had an inauspicious start on the streets of Long Beach and for a while it looked as though he was destined for a life of crime. But his talent as rap singer his ability to turn his hand to different musical styles as well as acting, allowed him to turn his life around and become a successful, if sometimes controversial, artist.
