Victoria Caroline Beckham was born on 17 April 1974 and is best known as the English singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the late 1990s with the girl pop group “Spice Girls,” dubbed “Posh Spice” by Britain “Top of the Pops” music magazine. With the Spice Girls disbandment, Posh Spice has launched her own solo career.

Born in Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex and raised in Goffs Oak, Herfordshire, the daughter of a successful electronics engineer allowed her to have a comfortable and stable upbringing. She attended St. Mary’s High School in Cheshunt. Inspiration came from the hit musical “Fame” and she decided that she would be famous. Supporting their daughter’s dream, her parents enrolled her at Jason Theatre School. At 17, she attended Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom, Surrey where she studied dance, modeling and joined a band “Persuasion.”

Her career with the all girl group Spice Girls was one that went from success to success with their first single, “wannabe” released in 1996 going straight to number one in both the UK and USA and 29 other countries. There would be a further nine number one singles from their albums “Spice,” “Spiceworld,” and “Forever.” It was only after their third album did they disband and Post Spice set out to build a solo career. There was a reunion tour in 2007, followed by a Greatest Hits album later that year.

Posh Spice set aside her Spice Girls era persona and released her first independent solo single, “Out of Your Mind.” Her release coincided with that of “Groove Jet (If This Ain’t Love)” resulting in a chart battle for supremacy. Beckham ultimately won out thanks to a publicity blitz that saw the single debut at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Her solo public debut was at London’s Hyde Park at a charity concert for the Prince’s Trust, where she sang her single to an audience of over 100,000 people.

Her next single, “Not Such An Innocent Girl” went head to head with Kylie Minogue’s “Cant’ Get You Out Of My Head,” and unfortunately lost the battle, outsold eight to one and debuting at number 6. Her eponymous debut album (Victoria Beckham) sold only a modest 50,000 copies.

The album’s second and final single, “A Mind of Its Own” was released in February and sold just over 56,500 copies to peak on the charts at number 6. There was talk of a third single, “I wish” but it never materialized with the confirmation of Beckham’s second pregnancy. It was at this time that Beckham and Virgin Records parted ways amicably and on good terms as the contract came to an end and neither party wanted to continue.

Fast forward a number of years and it was in 2002 that Telstar Records signed Beckham via a deal with 19 Management. She spent most of the year in the studio recording “Open Your Eyes” and the single “Let Your Head Go” was not released as Beckham was not happy with it, wanting more of an urban (R’n’B and Hip-Hop) sound. Following heavy promotion and TV appearances, the single was released in December 2003 and it paid off: The Single charted at number 3 in the UK and was her last single release to date.

Her career has been a mixed bag of highs and lows in that she is the only Spice Girl to never have a solo UK number one, yet have all of her singles and albums reach the Top 10, and she never crossed over in the American market, compounded by the collapse of Telstar records leaves her solo career in doubt.
